That's so exciting that you're taking your kiddos on their first trip! I agree that kids prefer destinations with water. While the Snowy Lakes were beautiful, the route is difficult. How old are your kids?
Be sure to check out the recent trip reports on WTA.org sounds like the bugs at Deep Lake are pretty bad right now... Have you considered something like Goat Lake? Bugs there aren't looking too bad, it's just off of Mountain Loop Highway. Happy Hiking!!

Hi Maura, Thanks for this great trip report and photos. I'm looking for a 3-4 day trip for introducing my three daughters to backpacking and Cutthroat Pass-Snowy Lakes was on the list. Based on your report I've decided against it, this time. I'm not sure spectacular scenery will be their top priority and am concerned that the exposure wrt the sun + the insects might put them off. The trip is still high on the list, just not this time.

Instead we will head for Deep Lake, accessed from the road to Salmon La Sac, north of Roslyn. I mention because you have a young child and I think it will be a good starter trip. The distances are short and the mountain views are pretty great, as are the opportunities for wandering. I look forward to reading more of your reports. Happy travels. John
