Hi Janay! You can stay in the lookout. It’s first come, first serve so plan on getting their early to snag a spot. But at least if it’s full you can camp below. More info here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mbs/recarea/?recid=17644

I really appreciated reading about your hike to Park Butte. I am in my 50’s now, but when I was younger–late 20’s I think (about 30 years ago–YIKES!) my now husband and I hiked to Park Butte a number of times. We camped below the lookout cabin a few times overnight and one year were the FIRST in the first come first served and stayed in the cabin for 2 or 3 nights. It is one of my most cherished and best memories. The days were beautiful and quiet there. The views of course were spectacular. We read every entry in those journals and added our own. I am so glad we got to be there. We now have a son who is 17 and we have been encouraging him to go to Park Butte. I hope he will someday. I am so glad to know that the cabin is still there and still in tact. Thanks again for sharing your story.

In reply to Kieran. Hi Kieran, Sorry for the delay in our reply - hope we're not too late! We went on a weekend. I would guarantee there'd be a lot fewer people if you could go during the week. There are also a number of designated campsites that are first come, first serve just below the lookout called Cathedral Camp. If you're going midweek sometime in September or October you should have pretty good peace and quiet. There's some more info on nearby campsites on the forest service page

Hi,

Thanks for all of the info and photographs. Did you guys go on a weekday or weekend? (I’m wondering because you mentioned that the trails were so busy – is this even true on weekdays?)

We’d like to camp somewhere near the lookout but we’re really looking for a night out in the wilderness with complete peace and quiet. Did you see many areas where that’s possible, or were all the camping areas very busy?
